THE CLAIM He claims He can redeem us, Yet some state that He cannot, Saying, ‘No one has the sinful Tendencies and thoughts I’ve got. No one’s ever made such missteps In precisely the same way. His grace will be beyond my reach When comes the judgment day.’ These self-abasing sentiments May grant some consolation, Till the moment scrutiny Reveals their true fixation. For at their center lies disguised That age-old enemy pride. In saying Christ can’t save our souls, We’ve all but said He lied. In setting ourselves up As an exception to His claim, We suggest that we know better, Thus, disparaging His name. The Son of God has given all To claim all those who believe, For none will ever merit Any grace they might receive. When we seek to do good, For mistakes make reparation, It’s not to purchase Heaven But to practice emulation. This is true discipleship; The wellspring of charity. A pathway not just one and done But trod continually. This is faith untainted A humility that is pure. Its fruit is confidence which grows With each day that we endure. Our efforts won’t be perfect But as we move on with resolve Our attitudes and habits Will assuredly evolve. Then, when before the bar we kneel Invoking our Savior’s name, He will say unto the Father, ‘On these I lay my claim.’ © Summer Owens

After discovering this cute poem I decided to design a handout for it. The handout is 5x7 and has enough white space to tape a full sized candy cane to.

Click on the image below to download. Free for personal use.

Look at the Candy Cane
What do you see?

Stripes that are red like the
blood shed for me.

White for my Savior
so sinless and pure.

"J" is for Jesus, my Lord
strong and sure.

Turn it around and a
staff you will see.

He's the Good Shepherd
that's calling to me.

Join with us in 25 days of service leading up to the celebration of Christ's birth! From the website:

#LightTheWorld is an invitation to transform Christmas into a season of service. Join us as we follow the example of Jesus Christ by ministering to others one by one—just like He did.

You can download a calendar from the website that is already filled out with service prompts or you can write your own ideas into the blank calendar I've created. I designed this calendar, free for your personal use just for this event. Just click on the calendar below.

This one is especially engaging for kids. Perhaps they can write down one small act of service they can do for someone every day this month leading up to Christmas and then they can put a sticker on each block when it's been accomplished. Merry Christmas!

I love watching LDS General Conference not only for the spiritual strengthening it provides me, but for the common sense, practical living applications as well. Concepts and truths are taught that can help anyone, religious or not, lead a happier life.

My favorite speaker this time around was Elder Michael John U. Teh. His talk titled, "Where your treasure is" was a positive influence and example of the mindset I am trying to adopt.

It is easy as a thrifter/deal seeker, to justify purchasing things I don't really need because they are a steal! Sometimes I browse craigslist, local garage sale sites and thrift stores just to "see" if there is anything I "need" on them. But if I don't know I "need" it until I see it, it's likely something I can do without. That doesn't mean life should be restricted to food and shelter living only. As humans we have a desire to move beyond the motions, to do more than survive. We want to live and thrive in happiness! But sometimes we gain false ideas of how to live well and of what we need to be happy.

Gaining true happiness isn't about owning things, it's about owning ourselves. Our own mentality.  We need to become aware that if we're not content with what we already have, we probably won't be content with anything else we acquire. I have to remind myself to often, that I have enough. That money and time are so easily wasted on things that won't matter to me in a short while.  That purchasing on impulse is always a really, really, silly idea.

I designed a printable of a quote within Elder Teh's talk that continues to resonate. It is simple but it is true and it is a good reminder for me every day, to look at what I have, and decide it is enough.

My printables are free for personal use. They may not be put up for sale or altered in any way. Thanks!
Here is a follow up to my previous post that had a family group sheet designed for those ancestors who were exceedingly fertile. : ) This group sheet is just a smaller version. One sided, with space for up to 7 children and some notes. Again, it's free and coordinates well with my pedigree chart.

Remember, these are not to be used for re-sale. Personal use only and no modifications to the design.  Thank you!

So sometimes in my genealogy research I've run across a married couple that have tons of children. And I haven't found a family group sheet that I like the look of, that has room for so many children. So I set to work designing one. It doesn't have an option to select gender on it but I'll just include an (M) or (F) after any unisex name. The sheet I created is two pages so you can print double sided if you want and it also coordinates with the  Free Printable Pedigree Chart I created a couple of weeks ago. Once again there is a print and fill pdf version and there is a type fillable pdf version. Maybe I'll also create a one sided version with notes for smaller family units. Hope you enjoy it!

Remember, all of my free printables are for personal use only. Thanks!

So, I'm a genealogy nut. I've been researching my family lines since the age of 14. That's um...about 18 years or so. It's the one hobby that I'm always active in. Other hobbies come and go in phases. But genealogy has always been nearly constant. I suppose that's because I. Love. It.

So much.

It just makes me happy. And I absolutely love teaching others how to get started. I taught some genealogy classes at the Baltimore Stake Family History Workshop when I lived out there, and wrote a series of blog posts for ldsblogs.com back in 2007-2008.

Anyhow, I helped teach Activity Days last night at my church. and I wanted to give the girls a pedigree chart that would be more visually interesting to them. In other words, cute. They were all about 8 years old. However, I couldn't find a free printable that fit the bill, so I put one together myself. And if you like it, you can use it too.

This is a standard 8.5 x 11 version for printing and filling out:

Here is an 8x10 version in case you want to type in the information, print and frame:

UPDATE!!
Hey, look at what I learned how to do. Below is a pdf form of the pedigree chart that you can fill in with your own information and print. Fun!

Download the fillable PDF here

Remember, all of my free printables are for personal use only. Enjoy!

I've never had a mantelpiece to decorate before. Oh the excitement! I'm planning on printing out a banner but I have to find one I really love or make one. For now I made two Halloween printables that I've framed. Don't you especially love that ornate metal frame? Yeah, I thrifted it for a couple of bucks this morning. That and the candle holder. And the jack-o-lantern box. Oh and all of the raffia pumpkins. I am a thrifting queen!

Using pretty fonts, some graphics from The Graphics Fairy and some pretty paper textures from Lost and Taken it was a snap to whip up something I loved. If you love these printables too, feel free to pin, download, etc. They are free for personal use, no resale. The raven printable has script from Edgar Allen Poe's, The Raven, written on it. Happy decorating!

Yesterday and today was the 183rd Semiannual General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It was really nice to sit down and listen to council from a living prophet and apostles of Jesus Christ. There were many inspiring talks given. One that particularly spoke to me was an address given by Elder Richard J. Maynes.

I love to play basketball and do other athletic activities and over the past year have worked really hard to get fit again and stay fit. Self discipline has been necessary to achieve this goal and it has not always been easy but I know it is necessary to be able to remain healthy and fit. Comparing that concept to our testimonies was just brilliant to me. Below is a free printable of the quote that inspired me so much, maybe it can give you motivation too.

Our bodies, our minds and our spirituality take constant maintenance and dedication to stay in shape. I think of it also as like having to clean a shower. If you take a second to spray and wipe down the glass daily then no water spots build up. It only takes a little bit of time to do this preventative maintenance. But if you skip this simple every day step and let the hardwater spots build up for weeks or months then you have to take much longer and work much harder in order to scrub the build up off. Regular maintenance of our body, mind and spirituality will prevent the build up of health problems and spiritual apathy. Self mastery is not a one time event, it's a continual process and I'm grateful for Elder Maynes for reminding me that it's just as important to practice daily spiritual self discipline as it is daily physical self discipline.

My lack of blogging in a nutshell.

When it comes to using time wisely, I am not the greatest. I have this tendency to always be learning new things or starting crazy projects just because I can. There is not enough time in one life for everything I wish to do and learn and see. I gave a talk on agency and using it wisely in church this past Sunday, not because I'm an authority on the subject but because it was the perfect topic for me to learn from. Blogging has been on the back burner for a while but other things manage to step up in place of whatever I feel I'm wasting too much time on. This has always been and will always be a battle for me. Doing things that are best above things that are just good or amusing is really hard for me. But I am trying. This quote is a good reminder to myself to choose the better part. And hopefully I will be able to do that more and more each day.
